Virtualization

On our cluster of vmware servers we provide space for virtual machines. Employees can request virtual machines for Windows and Linux systems. Please include:

  • a short hostname
  • estimated required disk space
  • estimated required memory
  • type of OS: Windows, Linux 32 bit, Linux 64 bit
  • the desired installation procedure, one of:
    • an ISO image or reference for that image
    • a pre-installed bare virtual system
  • desired network access restrictions, if any

We currently provide pre-installed virtual systems only for Windows. Disk space is only available for system-software and a few GB of data.

Purposes

Purposes for applying virtual instead of physical machines include:

  • prototyping
  • monitoring
  • licence servers

or, more general, systems that require relatively small resources and one or more of:

  • reliability of storage
  • facilities to save snapshots of the system state
  • remote access, with authentication, to the boot procedure
  • independence of hardware upgrades

Remote access to virtual machines

Besides the network access that most running systems usually provide, there is web-based remote access that includes, depending on your browser:

browser access to
IEFF3 Power on/off
IEFF3 Performance graphs
IE Console
IE: Internet Explorer
FF3 : Firefox 3
