Mesh Free Methods for Beams and Plates

Abstract
|
As we attempt to solve engineering problems of ever
increasing complexity, we must develop and learn new methods. The
traditional
methods, i.e. finite difference method, finite volume method, finite
element
method, have some limitations when dealing with large distortions,
deformable
boundaries, stress computation, cracks, and so on. Though they are not
yet
fully mature, mesh free methods promise to be a good alternative.
In this seminar, a review will be given of the shape function
construction, the principles of weak forms, and the derivation of
discretized system equations.
We focus on mechanics of solids and structures and explain the
following mesh free methods: Element Free Galerkin Method (EFG),
Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Method (MLPG), Point Interpolation
Method (PIM). These methods are applied to examples of beams and
plates, and the results will be discussed.
