Abstract
|
The obstacle problem is a typical
example of a free boundary value problem. It concerns the small
transverse displacement of an elastic membrane in equilibrium when its
boundary is fixed and the whole membrane is simultaneously subject to a
pressure and constrained to lie on one side of a rigid obstacle.
Alternatively one can formulate the obstacle problem as a
variational problem. By means of elliptic variational inequalities we
will show equivalence of the two formulations. Furthermore existence
and uniqueness is demonstrated.
