Abstract
|
Linear dispersive waves are
recognized by the existence of solutions in the form of wavetrains.
These give rise to dispersion relations which are determined by the
particular equation of the problem. The dispersion relation enables us
to solve the equation analytically by Fourier integrals. We
discuss the correspondence between these equations and their dispersion
relation, the asymptotic behaviour (which gives a proper understanding
of the content of exact solutions by Fourier integrals), group and
phase velocities which are also significant features of dispersive
waves, the kinematic derivation and energy propagation.
