Symplectic Integration of Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract
|
We discuss Hamiltonian systems and show that
symplecticity (preservation of area) of the flow is a characteristic
property. Next we discuss numerical methods which share this property.
Finally we will apply some numerical methods to the Lotka-Volterra
problem to illustrate different types of qualitative behaviour. It
turns out that symplectic methods have the correct behaviour.
