The 22nd ECMI Modelling Week 2008

European Student Workshop on Mathematical Modelling in Industry and Commerce

The purpose of the student workshop is to train students in using mathematical modelling in development of technical systems and in economics.
Project work will done in groups of 4-6 students on industrial mathematics problems posed by supervisors from ECMI centers.
Each group consists of an international mix of students.
The projects will be concluded by oral presentations (on the last day of the Workshop) and written reports (deadline two months after the Workshop).


Group 1: Mathematical modelling of the pumping kite wind generator: optimization of the power output

The costs are the following:
  • In line with previous workshops: students and instructors are responsible for their own travel expenses.
  • As decided by the ECMI Educational Committee, there is additionally a fee of 100 euros for each ECMI student.
    Please arrange payment of this fee via your local contact person.
  • The deadline for registration of ECMI students is May 31, 2008.
  • Non-ECMI students, please contact the organizers before May 31, 2008.

  • The accomodation is offered to all students coming from abroad free of charge.
  • All breakfasts are offered to these students free of charge and are consumed in your hotels.
  • All lunches and coffee breaks, the reception on the first Sunday and the Workshop Dinner on Saturday are offered to all students and instructors free of charge, offered to you by the TU Eindhoven.
  • All other dinners (Mon-Fri) are at your own expense. See below for affordable dinner suggestions.
  • Instructors are responsible for their own accomodation costs, see below for more info.

Instructors: you are free in choosing your accomodation yourself.
However, we can book the following hotels for you with discount.

If you are on a tight budget, there is the following option (rate approximately € 40 per night).
Be advised that this is a small-scale, family-run hotel.
After arrival, arrangements have to be made with the hotel owners.

Main location: Traverse on the campus of TU Eindhoven.
The campus is on 5 minutes walking distance of the train station of Eindhoven (exit north side).
The campus is also conveniently close to the city center with many dining options (see below).

Here are directions to, and a map of the campus.
Parking at the campus is always available, the rate is about 0.50 euro per hour.
Nearby airports are Eindhoven Airport, Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, and Brussels Airport. From Schiphol Airport, direct trains to Eindhoven leave twice an hour (:14 and :44). Travel time is 1.5 hours. See here for more train info.
From Eindhoven Airport, you can take the bus to Eindhoven Central Station. Buy a "strippenkaart" (15 strips), preferably at a kiosk as this is cheaper than in the bus.


The organizers will provide a number of rooms for group discussions and a larger room for the presentations. If you are in possession of a laptop, we warmly encourage you to bring it with you, as this may be very practical for the work. If you plan to bring a laptop, please inform your local contact person. To be able to use the wireless internet at TU Eindhoven, you'll have to register beforehand as will be announced in an email.
