Applied Data Analysis with SPSS

General info:

The past years have shown an explosive growth in the use of statistical techniques in applied research. Both for the design and planning of experiments and for the analysis of the results statistical methods have proven to be helpful. Implemented in easy-to-use statistical software like SPSS these methods are within reach of nowadays’ researchers. However, there is a need to learn how to apply these tools adequately to actual data. In the CEE/e-course ‘Applied Data Analysis with SPSS’ basic techniques for Exploratory Data Analysis, testing and estimation, correlation analysis and simple linear regression modeling are discussed and underlying principles are explained. Furthermore, the use of representative statistical software like SPSS is demonstrated and participants get the opportunity for hands-on experience using SPSS for applied data analysis.

The following topics will be treated:

• Introduction and Overview.
• Exploratory Data Analysis.
• Inference for Continuous Data: Statistical Testing and
Estimation for Paired and Independent Samples.
• Nonparametric Tests for Continuous Data: Mann-Whitney
  and Wilcoxon Tests.
• Inference for Categorical Data: Chi-square Tests.
• Correlation and Simple Linear Regression Models.
• Interpretation and Presentation of the Results.

After successful completion of the course participants should be able to perform basic data analyses with SPSS independently. Furthermore, they have obtained a solid basis for successfully attending more advanced courses on applied or engineering statistics, as offered within the CEE/e initiative.

Documentation Will be handed out at the beginning of the course.
Language The language of communication can be either Dutch or English, to be decided by mutual arrangement with the participants.
Prerequisite knowledge Elemantary acquaintance with probability, probability distributions and descriptive statistics (VWO-level).
Form Partly theory, partly hand-on experience.
Course duration 3 days.
