Cascading Style Sheets
Originally HTML is a language with emphasis on structure and with limited lay-out possibilities.
The increasing need for more lay-out possibilities has lead to
- Entangement of structure and lay-out
- Browser dependent elements and attributes
- Browser dependent reproduction of HTML documents
- Tricks to accomplish certain effects
Style sheets, especially Cascading Style Sheets, offer the possibility for
- Separation of structure and lay-out (the original goal of HTML)
- Description of the lay-out (presentation) in terms of rules of style (instead of HTML attributes)
- A browser-independent reproduction of the document
