Cookman investigates the mysterious disappearance of the Franklin expedition, a well equipped, experienced and admired crew that set out to find the Northwest Passage in 1845 and was never seen again. The last recorded sighting of them is chilling: "(they were) carrying a number of skulls...there were more than four...also bones from legs and arms that appeared to have been sawed off." The excerpt I have permission to distribute is taken from Chapter 21 of the book -- "Cannibalism." It recounts the horror the crew faced after abandoning ship and describes their surreal descent into cannibalism. To get the excerpt, simply send mailto:jhart@tenagra.com with the subject line "Send Ice Blink" and I will reply with a text file. Cook left the Spanish in California, with his new timekeeper , which allowed him to keep better track of his latitude, the Spanish where anxious to exercise there control of the Pacific Northwest. Several official voyages into the cold northern waters where made following Drake's departure from the Acapulco area in 1578-9, and life continued in a very Spanish way with only occasional fur voyages and independent entrepreneurs taking advantage of what resources they could turn a dollar with. None of these voyages were official , so the Spanish government sent several ships and men to fly the flag on what is now Vancouver Island, British Columbia, several ships belonging to English traders where seized and the crew taken to Mexico as prisoners. (This is only a story) Rumour was that when Capt. Vancouver arrived at latitude 48' from the Pacific ocean and entered the Straight of Juan de Fuca he let it be understood by the Spanish that by showing a "cooked" set of books ; he had come directly from England using a newly discovered Northwest Passage. A little subterfuge goes a long way when resources are limited, the Spanish dickered about just how and when they where going to leave. They eventually left and also closed down a fort they had built at the entrance to the Straight of Juan de Fuca. What historical significance had Valdez , they named an island after him in the Straight of Georgia. Hi there again!

Today's Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper, p. = 30, has=20 the following item under "Send your question to Maroochy Shire Library = Service":

"Q: Can you tell me how the Glass House Mountains = came by=20 their name?

"A: James Cook gave the mountains their name in = 1770=20 because they resembled glass furnaces he had seen in his native = Yorkshire..."
"From: The Cambridge Dictionary of Australian=20 Places."

Those who have a copy of the Journals may like to look = up 17th=20 May 1770. On page 225 of Ray Parkin's "HM Bark Endeavour" where Cook = describes=20 the scene from offshore of what is now the Sunshine Coast, where I now = live,=20 we read:

(Parkin's sketch of = Cook's view=20 from the sea beyond Moreton Island, about 50 km from the group of = volcanic=20 plugs standing up from the eroded plain, has used some artistic = licence: it=20 looks more like what I see from 20 km distance near my house on a very = clear=20 day, from a much higher vantage point. If anyone is interested, I can = scan and=20 send this pic.)

I have always been puzzled by Cook's apparent=20 comparison with what I took to be greenhouses. Had he seen something = like the=20 huge glasshouses at Kew Gardens when he visited Banks at his Revesby = estate? A=20 glass furnace seems a much more probable explanation. Can anyone = comment? Was=20 such a glass furnace similar to a Staffordshire bottle-shaped pottery = kiln,=20 which the mountains do indeed resemble?

We will make a Field Trip, meeting at 7:00 PM at Waverly Auctions, Bethesda, MD, for “The Map Auction Business Today: Cartography from the FIAT LUX Library,” a presentation by WMS Member/Waverly Owner Dale Sorenson and remarks by Eric Wolf. A major part of the Fiat Lux Library of cartography will be available for inspection as it will be auctioned off two days later, on Thursday March 1. If you would like to see a list of the auction items in advance, go to the Waverly Auctions website . Field Trip participants are asked to advise Tom Sander (details below) if they plan to attend. This will let our host know how many of us to expect - a short email to Tom Sander would be fine. Waverly Auctions is convenient to Bethesda METRO (Red Line) - walk 6 short blocks north on Old Georgetown Road, then turn right ½ block on Cordell. From the Washington Beltway, take Old Georgetown Road (Exit 36) south for 3 miles - Cordell Avenue is on the left. There is a parking garage across the street from Waverly Auctions. If parking is not possible there, there are charts at the garage indicating other nearby garages. Bethesda is renowned for its many restaurants. If you wish to dine early, or perhaps after the event, among the restaurants in Waverly's immediate vicinity are Nam's (Thai, and across the street from Waverly), Oodles of Noodles (Asian), and Tragara (Italian). Additional options are too numerous to mention. Why not bring your spouse, partner or friend and make this a real 'evening out'? OTHER EVENTS NEXT WEEK: On March 1, 2001, Waverly Auctions will be auctioning a portion of the Fiat Lux Library of Cartographic items. See the Web site above. While this is not a Washington Map Society event, it will be of interest to our members. From March 2-4, 2001, The 26th Annual Washington Antiquarian Book Fair will be held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge, 1900 N. Fort Myer Drive, Arlington, VA. This is very near the Rosslyn Metro (Blue and Orange Lines). Rare Books, maps, prints and more will be presented by 75 dealers. The hours are Friday from 5-9 PM, Saturday from 11AM-5PM , and Sunday from 12-5PM. There is a $12 entrance fee for unlimited attendance on all days. Otherwise the charge is $6 for Saturday or Sunday. More information, to include a list of dealers, is at the Fair's web site or you may call 301-654-2626. While the fair is in no way sponsored or endorsed by the Washington Map Society, numerous of the dealers present are members of the WMS (including JoAnn & Richard Casten Ltd, Hemispheres Antique Maps & Prints, and the Philadelphia Print Shop). Be sure to mention this notice and the Washington Map Society if you shop at one of our member locations. IN THE FUTURE (See WMS Web Site below for more details on these coming events): Mar 22 Pierre Sales “Innovation: Reformatting History and Education” Apr 19 FIELD TRIP to the National Geographic Society, Washington, DC. “Development of the 7th Edition of the National Geographic World Atlas” Apr 21 FIELD TRIP to New York City to see the NY Public Library Exhibit “Heading West: Mapping the Territory” and visit the NY Antiquarian Book Fair (map dealers present too). We will also recognize the 50th anniversary issue of The Portolan and editors of the journal. The Capitol Hill Club was the site of our very successful and popular event in May 1999. It is directly behind the Library of Congress and across the street from METRO. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW. All meetings (except as noted) will be held at the Reading Room, Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress, Madison Building, Independence Avenue (between First and Second Streets), Southeast, Washington D.C. It is a letter that was sent in about the year 1500, from an Englishman called John Day, to the Major Admiral of Castile (this admiral is not Columbus) In this letter it is said that "English sailors had crossed to a coast placed in the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in a latitude equivalent to that it exists between the Cape Dursey of Ireland, and the mouth of the river of Bourdeaux". John Day adds: "this land already was seen and descovered in the last times for sailors of Bristol, who found Brazil, as his Lordship knows". According to Day, that land would be the "Island of Brazil", and it was the principal one of some lands that the men of Bristol had seen. Probably these men were Robert Thorne and Hugh Elyot, that in 1494 had done a travel to Newfoundland or Canada. Do you know something on this matter ? : a travel to "Brazil island" (mythical island of celts in the Atlantic) made by sailors of Bristol at the end of the Middle Age?
