Cook in 1906, allegedly at the top of Mt. McKinley. This photo was discovered by historian Robert M. Bryce, author of _Cook & Peary: the Polar Controversy, Resolved_. Although two cropped versions of the photo were published by Cook, the uncropped version proves beyond doubt that the summit photo is a fake, taken at "Fake Peak", about 20 miles southeast of McKinley, at an altitude of less than 5500 feet. The edges (cropped out by Cook before he published) contain details that match exactly with those from another photo taken at Fake Peak. Although many of Cook's other published photos from this expedition have been known to be fakes for decades, the 'summit' photo has always been exhibit A for defenders of Cook's claim to have climed the 20,000 foot mountain. Bryce has also published a key photo of a campsite at a place where Cook never claimed to have camped, further evidence of the fraud; and he makes a critical (and devastating) examination of the variant timetables of the climb, as published, and as written in his diary. Hongre, G. Hulot, & A. Khokhlov. An analysis of the geomagnetic field over the past 2000 years. _Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors_ 106 (1998), 311-335. The number of geomagnetic observations worldwide during historic times is now large enough for the authors to model the field throughout the ephoc 0-1700 CE for the first time. These data consist of, e.g., kiln bricks, lake varve sediments, and lava flows. The authors have published the parameters of a third-order Spherical Harmonic Analysis (SHA) at 25-year intervals during this period. SHA is a standard technique in geophysics for describing the geomagnetic field. Tonight I ran this model through a program (Geomag 3.0 from the National Geophysical Data Center) for year 1492 and found reasonably good agreement with the compass variations reported by Columbus on his first voyage. Researchers interested in the effect of compass variation on nautical charting and exploration would do well to consult this paper, and the NGDC (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov). Geomag 3.0 is available from NGDC's anonymous ftp server at: ftp.ngcd.noaa.gov Login as anonymous using your e-mail address as the password; then change directory to the Solid_Earth/Mainfld_Mag/Models directory. Under the benevolent rule (with interruptions from 1639 - 1693) of the Dukes of Courland in Latvia the Germans, Latvians, Scandinavians, Dutch, British, French, Jews, Caribs and Gambians from Africa formed an international settlement of Free Men at the Great Courland Bay engaged in trade with North America, Brazil. Other Couranian settlements were located at Black Rock (Fort Bennett), Mount Irivine (Little Courland Bay), For Monck, Fort Schmoll, Fort Casimir, King Peter Bay (Kalpi Bay), and Castara Bay (Coerse Bay, Kursu Licis)." Doing research in the fate of the Scandinavian settlers I have found for instance that many of them came from the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea (now Swedish territory) about half way between Courland and the Swedish coast. I know of Eric Williams, _History of the People of Trinidad and Tobago_, London 1964 (haven't had a chance yet to look at it yet) but wonder if anybody with a Tobagonian interest might know of later local or British studies on the Couranian period in the history of Tobago.
