Andre Engels, engels@win.tue.nl, list manager ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Boydell & Brewer is re-publishing Beaglehole's classic edition of THE JOURNALS OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK this month. The publisher says: Beaglehole's famous edition of Cook's journals, originally published by the Hakluyt Society but long out of print, is at last available again. The substantial volumes contain Cook’s own day-by-day descriptions of his three great voyages of discovery; introductions and detailed notes accompany the texts, providing necessary identifications and references, and giving additional information from other sources supplementing Cook’s account. More extended extracts from the journals of Cook’s shipmates are printed as appendices. A separate portfolio contains the manuscript charts and views drawn by Cook and his officers, which he regarded as an essential complement to his Journals. This is an essential source for the historian or voyage-enthusiast: Beaglehole’s monumental work of scholarship stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of discovery and exploration. For more information on the book, go to the following web page: http://www.boydell.co.uk/COOK.HTM The book will be priced at 595.00 GBP/1070.00 US$ on publication. The offer price to members of the Discovery & Exploration mailing list is 495.00 GBP/890.00 US$, valid until the end of October 1999. For more information, or to order the book, you can e-mail the publisher direct at boydell@boydell.co.uk addressing your requests to the undersigned.
