Informaticaonderzoek aan de TU/e van zeer hoge kwaliteit

Dat is het oordeel van een internationale evaluatiecommissie die afgelopen najaar het informaticaonderzoek aan negen Nederlandse universiteiten onderzocht. De commissie stond onder leiding van professor Willy Zwaenepoel, hoogleraar en decaan van de faculteit Informatica van de École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. De evaluatiecommissie beoordeelde het informaticaonderzoek op vier criteria: kwaliteit, productiviteit, relevantie en haalbaarheid.

Binnen de TU/e zijn negen verschillende informaticaonderzoeken beoordeeld. De TU/e haalt maar liefst een algemene score van 4.5 op een schaal van 5. Het expertisegebied Architectuur van Informatiesystemen onder leiding van Wil van der Aalst en het expertisegebied Algoritmiek onder leiding van Mark de Berg behaalde zelfs op alle criteria de volle 5 punten. Ook de onderzoeksgroep van Jack van Wijk (Visualisatie) wordt door de commissie tot de absolute top gerekend.

Waardering
De commissie waardeert de focus van de TU/e op de fundamentele problemen binnen de Informatica en de manier waarop aan Informatici in de afgelopen jaren leiding is gegeven. Ook is de commissie zeer te spreken over de aandacht voor toepassingen en de ontwikkelde tools en softwaresystemen. Wel merkt de commissie op dat het aantal vrouwelijke hoogleraren en u(h)d's klein is, en hoopt dat de Faculteit hier in de toekomst verandering in kan brengen.

Wereldtop
Nederland behoort op het gebied van de informatica tot de sterkste landen in de wereld. Bij alle universiteiten zag de commissie sterk bewijs voor excellent onderzoek. De onderzoeksgroepen zijn succesvol in het aantrekken van toptalent uit binnen- en buitenland. De kwaliteit van de wetenschappelijke publicaties stijgt en zo ook de gehele impact van het onderzoek. Nederland moet die hoge positie het komende decennium kunnen handhaven want ook onder de jongere onderzoekers schuilt het nodige toptalent.

Computer Science research at TU/e of very high quality

That is the assessment reached by an international Evaluation Committee that examined computer science research at nine Dutch universities at the end of last year. The Committee was led by professor Willy Zwaenepoel, Professor and Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The Evaluation Committee assessed computer science research according to four criteria: quality, productivity, relevance and feasibility.

Within TU/e nine different computer science research groups were assessed. TU/e attains a general score of no less than 4.5 on a scale ranging up to 5. Indeed, the Architecture of Information Systems research group led by Wil van der Aalst and the Algorithms research group led by Mark de Berg scored the full 5 points for all criteria. The Committee also ranks the research group of Jack van Wijk (Visualization) among the absolute top.

Appreciation
The Committee appreciates the focus of TU/e on the study of deep problems within Computer Science and the manner in which computer scientists have been managed over the past few years. In addition, the Committee was quite pleased with the attention devoted to applications and the tools and software systems developed. It is noted by the Committee, though, that the number of female professors and assistant and associate professors is small, and hopes that the Department can change this gender balance in the future.

World top
The Netherlands ranks among the strongest nations worldwide in the area of computer science. At all universities the Committee has seen strong evidence of excellent research. The research groups are successful in attracting top talents from home and abroad. The quality of scientific publications is increasing, as is the overall impact of the research. In the next decade the Netherlands should be able to maintain that high position, for among younger researchers there is a wealth of top talent to be found as well.

Wiskundeonderzoek TU/e gemiddeld beste van Nederland

De wiskundeonderzoeksprogramma's van de TU Eindhoven krijgen gemiddeld het hoogste cijfer in de beoordeling van de internationale commissie van de QANU (Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities) over de periode 2003-2008. De commissie, met professor Henk van der Vorst als voorzitter, is zeer te spreken over kwaliteit, productiviteit, relevantie en levensvatbaarheid van de drie onderzoeksprogramma's.

Hoge scores
De beoordeling vindt zesjaarlijks plaats en werd uitgevoerd in 3TU-verband. Op een schaal van 20 scoren de Eindhovense programma's gemiddeld 19,33. Het programma SPOR (Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research), geleid door Onno Boxma, Remco van der Hofstad en Gerhard Woeginger, verwierf de maximale score van vier keer een 5. De twee andere programma's, CASA (Centre for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications), geleid door Bob Mattheij en Mark Peletier, en DMA (Discrete Mathematics and Applications), geleid door Arjeh Cohen en Henk van Tilborg, behaalden drie keer een 5 en een 4.

Technische Wiskunde aan de TU/e
De commissie prijst de uitwerking van de missie van 'technische wiskunde' aan een technische universiteit. Zij complimenteert Eindhoven met het gevoerde beleid om excellente onderzoekers aan te trekken, en stelt de valorisatieactiviteiten zoals LIME (Laboratory for Industrial Mathematics Eindhoven) als goed voorbeeld voor anderen.

Samenwerking
Onlangs hebben de wiskundegroepen in Eindhoven, Delft en Enschede hebben hun positie versterkt met de oprichting van het 3TU.Applied Mathematics Institute (AMI), dat op 15 april 2010 van start ging. Zij bouwen daarin samen aan een bloeiende toekomst.

TU/e mathematics research best in the Netherlands on average

Across the board, the mathematics research programs of Eindhoven University of Technology are rated highest in the assessment of the international committee of the QANU (Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities) over the period 2003–2008. The committee, chaired by professor Van der Vorst, speaks highly of the quality, productivity, relevance and viability of the three research programs.

High Scores
The review takes place once every six years and was conducted within the 3TU context. On a scale of 20 the Eindhoven programs score 19.33 on average. The SPOR program (Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research), led by Onno Boxma, Remco van der Hofstad and Gerhard Woeginger, obtained the maximum score of four times 5. The two other programs, CASA (Centre for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications), led by Bob Mattheij and Mark Peletier, and DMA (Discrete Mathematics and Applications), led by Arjeh Cohen and Henk van Tilborg, obtained three times 5 and a 4.

Applied Mathematics at the TU/e
The committee commends the elaboration of the mission of ‘applied mathematics’ at a university of technology. It compliments Eindhoven on the policy conducted for attracting excellent researchers, and regards the valorization activities such as LIME (Laboratory for Industrial Mathematics Eindhoven) as a good example for others.

Collaboration
The mathematics groups in Eindhoven, Delft and Enschede have strengthened their positions through the establishment of the 3TU.Applied Mathematics Institute (AMI), which commenced its activities on 15th April 2010. In this institute they have joined forces to build on a flourishing future.
