Workshop on Filtration Problems in Porous Media and Paper Manufacturing (WG 14)
[ back to 'events' ]

When and Where
Organized by the Macsinet Working Group “ Filtration Problems in Porous Media and Paper Manufacturing” at the Kennispoort Building (indicated as KP on the map), Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands) on  9-10 May 2003.

Registration fee: € 60 (conference dinner included).

Introduction:
Among the needs of industry with respect to industrial mathematics in this field are:

  1. dealing with multiple scales (micro, meso, macro) and upscaling properties of porous media as permeability, mechanical properties, etc.
  2. investigation of strongly coupled processes as flow in deformable porous media, multi-component flow, interaction of surface flow and porous media flow, etc.
  3. identification of parameters and constitutive relations
  4. algorithms and software for numerical simulation

These needs arise in several industrial activities:

- production of paper and board
- reservoir engineering
- medical instrumentation

In porous media it is usually very difficult to perform adequate measurements to determine parameters and constitutive relations. It is even difficult to determine the right constitutive behaviour, e.g. is some deformable porous medium elastic, visco-elastic or plastic? Reasons for these difficulties are the depth of the porous medium (oil reservoirs), the scale differences of the porous medium (paper) and the variability of the porous medium (living tissues). Therefore mathematical models are needed to have the possibility to perform various simulations, or to derive macro-models from micro-models.
In all of these areas mathematical investigations are carried out. After the
previous meetings in Göteborg and Kaiserslautern, this meeting will concentrate on clarifying the needs from industry and industrially oriented research institutes.
