Coupled problems
[ back to 'working groups' ]

Description:
At the kick-off meeting of MACSI-net in Amsterdam (November 2000), the topics of Model Reduction and Coupled Problems turned out to be of great interest to many people. Because of the interrelation between the two topics, it was decided to form one working group dedicated to both topics, whence WG2 is now dedicated to Coupled Problems and Model Reduction.

The working group currently has about 12 members. The idea is to set up an infrastructure for exchange of information and identification of problems. A concrete action in this respect has been the set-up of an internet meeting point. This can be reached by sending an e-mail to

modelreduction@egroups.com

In this way, one can become a member of the working group, and all e-mails sent by members of the working group will be directed to you.

As a further, and very important, means of communication and dissemination, workshops will be organized by members of the working group. These workshops are open to all nodes of MACSI-net, and will also be advertised to a broader audience. One is advised to look up the calendar of “Events” for a list of upcoming activities.

Subjects:
Characteristic of the working group is that no problems are excluded, and that the scope is rather general. On the one hand, we will concentrate on mathematical techniques which are suitable for a wide variety of problems, whereas on the other hand specific problem areas will be identified. At the kick-off meeting in Amsterdam, the members of the working group mentioned the following common denominators:

· Overlapping domains
· Different physical aspects
· Near field/far field approximations
· Hierarchy of models:

Coupled problems can be tackled by constructing reduced order models for the different aspects of the problem. Therefore, model reduction plays an important role in addressing coupled problems. The working group aims at identifying techniques for doing complicated coupled simulations, with or without the use of model reduction techniques.
