Total Positivity by Prof.Dr. Sergey Fomin, University of Michigan, USA. |
Prof.Dr. Sergey Fomin studied at Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University, where he has been a student of Anatoly Vershik. He then worked at Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute (1982-1991) and St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation (1991-present). In 1993-2000 he was a faculty member at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Departement of Mathematics. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. He held visiting appointments at the Mittag-Leffler Institute (1992), MIT (1992-1993), MSRI (1997), Erwin Schroedinger Institute (2000), and Isaac Newton Institute (2001), and served as Director of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Symmetric Functions 2001" in Cambridge, UK. He is presently the editor for combinatorics at Transactions and Memoirs of the AMS.
The main research of Sergey Fomin is in combinatorics, particularly emphasizing its relationship with algebra, geometry, and other areas of mathematics. Two focal points in recent years have been total positivity and Schubert calculus.

A matrix is totally positive (resp., totally nonnegative) if all its minors are positive (resp., nonnegative).
These classes of matrices arise and play a prominent role across various fields, including, but not limited to, such areas as
discrete mathematics, probability and stochastic processes, and representation theory. This minicourse will provide an introduction to the
subject, survey the applications mentioned above, and explore algorithmic, combinatorial, and geometric aspects of total positivity.

The admission fee for a minicourse is
EURO 680. However, our courses are free of charge for EIDMA members
and for univeristy students. Reductions or exemptions do apply to
