Program in brief When everyone has arrived at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven the week begins. The students are allocated to problem-teams, as far as possible, on the basis of their given areas of mathematical expertise. However, this is not the only criterion; one of the requirements is also to have a mix of countries represented within each student-team and a fair distribution of male and female students therein. The modeling activities start off with the problem owner giving a brief outline of the industrial real life problem and an indication of the relevance of the problem for his company. The students question the problem owner about the precise nature of the problem and about what kind of solution is preferably to be determined. Once the students have identified and understood the "real" problem to be tackled (and this process may take some days) they must formulate a model of the real life situation and, next, the mathematical problem (which is in general not uniquely determined). Then they proceed with the mathematical analysis applying mathematical techniques, ultimately leading to a mathematical solution or a technique to obtain a solution numerically. Using these results, they finally arrive at an approximate solution of the original real problem. The instructors assist the student-teams in all stages of the educational process. At the end of the week the student groups have to present their findings to all other participants. Accommodation and reimbursement of travel expenses During the week you will be lodged in bungalow park De Kempervennen. The costs of traveling will be transferred to your bank account based on a copy of your travel tickets, after the week has ended. |
