Energy minimisation on a toric grid Jan Draisma We discuss a ``checkerboard conjecture'' that states that the (globally) energy-minimising configurations of |G|/2 repelling particles on a toric grid G=(Z/n_1 Z) x ... x (Z/n_d Z) with all n_i even are the two checkerboard configurations {a|sum_i a_i even} and {a|sum_i a_i odd}. This is joint work with Niek Bouman and Johan van Leeuwaarden.
