Tropical Geometry I

Jan Draisma

This is the first in a series of talks on tropical geometry. Starting from scratch, I will define tropical varieties, and discuss several motivating examples, such as Speyer and Sturmfels's tropical Grassmannian of lines, which turns out to equal the "space of phylogenetic trees" introduced by Billera, Holmes and Vogtmann.
