Martin Rem (61), bijzonder lid van VIE, is benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. Ir. Gerrit Braks, burgemeester van Eindhoven, spelde hem op donderdag 29 februari 2008 het bijbehorende lintje op. Hij werd erdoor verrast. “Pas op het moment dat ik burgemeester Braks met zijn ambtsketting binnen zag lopen, had ik het door. Ik vind het erg verrassend en erg leuk”, vertelt Martin Rem over de onderscheiding. “Het is toch een erkenning voor het werk dat je al die jaren gedaan hebt.” Martin Rem is sinds 1978 hoogleraar Parallelle Berekeningen aan de TU/e. Hij wordt geroemd als een van de grondleggers van de informatica als wetenschapsgebied in Nederland. Martin Rem publiceerde ruim tachtig artikelen in internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschriften. Meer dan 150 studenten studeerden bij hem af. Daarnaast promoveerden nog eens 21 studenten onder zijn begeleiding. Martin Rem stond onder meer aan de basis van de ingenieursopleiding Technische Informatica (1981) en de ontwerperopleiding Technische Informatica (1987). Martin Rem beperkt zich geenszins tot de theorie. Zo werkte hij jarenlang samen met Philips om de verworven theoretische inzichten praktisch te kunnen toepassen. Hij heeft sterk bijgedragen aan de status van het vakgebied Informatica en aan het aanzien van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Ook op het bestuurlijke vlak was Martin Rem bijzonder actief. Hij was van 1996 tot 2001 rector van de TU/e. Nadat hij als eerste medeoprichter betrokken was bij het Embedded Systems Instituut werd hij van dit instituut de eerste en algemeen wetenschappelijk directeur van 2001 tot en met 2004. Daarnaast was hij onder meer directeur van het Stan Ackermans Instituut. Sinds begin 2005 gaf hij leiding aan het Nationaal Regieorgaan voor ICT-onderzoek en -innovatie, waarmee hij een belangrijke bijdrage aan het maatschappelijk draagvlak voor strategisch en toepassingsgericht ICT-onderzoek en de voor Nederland cruciale versterking van de ICT-kennisinfrastructuur en van de valorisatie van dit onderzoek. Martin Rem (61), honorary member of VIE, was conferred the decoration of Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau as a token of appreciation for his contribution of exceptional value to the society at large. The Dutch honours system is sober but fair. It expresses appreciation of a person’s merits and achievements in the service of the community. The Netherlands has two civilian orders of merit: the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands and the Order of Orange-Nassau. The Order of the Lion of the Netherlands was created in 1815 and is one of the oldest Dutch orders. It has three classes: Knight Grand Cross, Commander and Knight. It can be conferred on people who have rendered outstanding services to the community, often through achievements or efforts springing from exceptional talents. Examples might include pioneering scientific work or innovative entrepreneurship, outstanding sporting achievements or unique creativity in the arts or culture. The Order of Orange-Nassau was created in 1892.This Order has six classes: Knight Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, Knight and Member. People who have made a contribution of exceptional value to the community are eligible for appointment to one of these classes. The many people active in voluntary work are eligible, not merely office-holders, but also those who keep their associations going through their dedication and hard work and make them accessible to others. During the ceremony, ir. Gerrit Braks, mayor of Eindhoven, conferred the decoration to professor Rem. Since 1978, Martin Rem is full professor Parallel Computations at Eindhoven University of Technology. He is considered to be one of the founders of computer science as a scientific area in the Netherlands. He achieved over 80 publications in international scientific journals and magazines and more than 150 students and 21 PhD candidates graduated under his supervision. Martin Rem stood (1981) at the basis of the "ingenieursopleiding Technische Informatica" (Computer Science and Engineering) and he stood (1987) at the basis of the "Ontwerperopleiding Technische Informatica" (Software Technology PDEng degree program). During the period 1996-2001 he was Rector Magnificus of Eindhoven University of Technology. Martin Rem definitely did not limit himself to theory. Many years he worked at and with Philips to apply and transfer the knowledge to practical applications. He has strongly contributed to the status of the scientific discipline of Computer Science and the image of Eindhoven University of Technology. Also in the area of management Martin Rem was very active. From 1996 until 2001 he was Rector Magnificus of Eindhoven University of Technology. After being one of the founders of the Embedded Systems Institute, from 2001 until 2004, he was its first general scientific director. In addition he was also director of the Stan Ackermans Institute. Since Early 2005 he was leading the Nationaal Regieorgaan voor ICT-onderzoek en -innovatie, providing an important contribution to the societal support for strategic and application directed ICT research and the for the Netherlands crucial strengthening of the ICT knowledge infrastructure and the valorization of this research.
