Description

Philips Healthcare produces various types of medical imaging systems, such as X-ray, CT and MRI scanners. A high reliability of these devices is of utmost importance. They should rarely fail and if so, they should be repaired fast. For the latter, it is important that the root cause of a failure can be identified quickly. To find the root cause, the log data of an imaging system can be analyzed either remotely or in the field. Log information of Philips imaging systems is automatically sent to a central server on a daily basis or can be accessed remotely in case of a failure. A log file typically contains hundreds of thousands of log messages per day. Many of these log messages are less relevant for identifying the root cause of a failure. The goal of this student assignment is to design an interactive visualization tool for log data to assist service engineers in finding failures.

Assignment

The log information is currently mostly viewed in textual form, using a dedicated log analyzer. The goal of the assignment is to design a software tool that can graphically visualize log information so that:

The student will have to understand the requirements of service engineers and use them to design and create a prototype tool that can be tested and validated on the field.
