5-day minicourse on
Buildings and Groups of Lie-Type by Prof.Dr. Bernhard Mühlherr, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. |
Bernhard Mühlherr received his Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen in 1994. He held positions in Tübingen, Dortmund and at Tufts University. Since 2002 he is professor for combinatorial geometry at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In his research he is interested in groups and geometries especially in the theory of buildings, Coxeter groups and Kac-Moody groups. In his habilitation thesis 1999 he extended Tits' classification of spherical buildings to certain classes of twin buildings. He was co-organizer of several international conferences about groups and buildings.
Contents
The theory of buildings has been developped by J. Tits in order to study semi simple Lie groups from a
combinatorial point of view. This theory applies equally well to a larger class of groups, the so called groups of Lie-Type, which
include the Chevalley groups over fields. We provide an introduction to buildings and to spherical Moufang buildings. With each group
of Lie-type there is associated a spherical Moufang building in a natural way. We will use this fact in order to prove several results
about groups of Lie-type. In particular we will give a new proof of the Curtis-Tits theorem.
