Preface

The year 1994 has been very important for the Euler Institute for Discrete Mathematics and its Applications. Although EIDMA was already functioning as a research school from September 1993, it was on May 4, 1994, that the Executive Boards of the Universities of Technology of Eindhoven, Delft and Twente established EIDMA as a joint research school. Roughly at the same time the funds became available that the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research had awarded EIDMA in the from of a so-called STIMULANS subsidy. This grant gave an important financial impulse to the participating groups for the year 1994/95. It enabled them to attract postdocs and other visitors, to obtain advanced equipment, to organize symposia and to let their own people participate in other meetings. In a letter of July 18, 1994, the Executive Board of the Eindhoven University of Technology recognized EIDMA as research school and gave her a healthy financial basis for the first five years of its existence. Later in the year, groups at other universities and industrial laboratoria joined EIDMA by signing Cooperation Agreements. They are: Centre for Mathematics and Computing Science (CWI), Catholic University Brabant, University of Ghent, Catholic University Leuven, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Universität GHS Essen, Philips Crypto, and PTT Research Laboratory. Further, EIDMA signed letters of intent of collaboration with the research schools Stieltjes and MRI. A final noteworthy activity is the creation by EIDMA of her own Preprint Series and Report Series. It is our believe that members and visitors of EIDMA will find them useful instruments. This Annual Report gives a detailed description of the activities of EIDMA and its participating groups during the year 1994. We hope that it will be a suitable tool to bring EIDMA's members closer together and that others will find it an appropriate way to get to know EIDMA better.
