Preface

The single most important event in 1995 for EIDMA as an institute was its formal recognition as a research school by the KNAW (the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences) on June 19, 1995. The collaboration of strong research groups in the Netherlands, Belgium and Northrhein-Westphalen and EIDMA's curriculum were among the reasons for this positive and honourable evaluation.

In 1995, participating groups at the three Dutch technical universities and at the CWI, but also EIDMA as a whole, could fully profit from the STIMULANS grant that was awarded a year earlier by NWO. As a result, workshops were organized, equipment was upgraded, many visitors could be welcomed, additional conferences were attended, and so on. This grant indeed acted as its name suggests.

The intensive collaboration between EIDMA and Philips Research Eindhoven was formalized in 1995 when both parties signed a Cooperation Agreement. Further, a letter of intent of collaboration was signed with the Mathematische Seminar der Universität Hamburg on July 4, 1995.

This annual report will give its reader a good impression of the many activities organized by EIDMA and the participating groups. In particular, we would like to mention the minicourses taught by distinguished scholars which have turned out to be extremely succesful. Attendees from many other countries prove that over and over again.
