Cryptographic standards for document security

This PhD research focuses on emerging high-level security standards and how cryptographic primitives are applied in those standards. Examples of such standards are seen in the recent evolution to embed cryptography in XML documents. As XML is becoming the standard markup language for documents and communications, there are a lot of initiatives to embed security in the resulting XML. Because XML offers more than the traditional binary format, the resulting XML-security proposals also have extra features, such as the ability to sign a small part of an XML document.

In this research, we study the risks that are introduced by adding extra functionality. We also want to make new proposals, of which the security is thoroughly investigated.
