1st Line Territorial Force Divisions November 1918
On this page an Order of Battle of the 1st Line T.F. Infantry Divisions present on 11 November 1918 is given; artillery, engineers, etc. are, again, not listed. This list should be read in conjunction with the 1914 list, thus demonstrating the differences. Possible subtitles of battalions have been omitted; they can be found on the 1914 Order of Battle.
One of the most apparent differences is that the number of infantry battalions in Divisions on the Western Front was reduced from 13 to 10 (including the pioneer battalion). This was done in February 1918. At the same time, with a few exceptions, the Machine-Gun companies, 1 in each Brigade and 1 Divisional, joined together to form a Divisional M.G. Battalion. This battalions had the same number as the Division.
Not all Divisions followed the pattern described above. The 43rd and 44th Division were sent to India in 1914, and by the end of the war they had lost much of their infantry which had been sent mostly to the Middle-East as reinforcements. Another exception was the 53rd Division which changed to the Indian establishment between 4 June and 29 August 1918. Henceforth, it lost its territorial character.
Furthermore, though on the Western Front, the 50th Division was broken up and reconstituted in July 1918. The original battalions were reduced to cadre, and sent to 39th Division subsequently. As can be seen below, the new battalions were regulars and New Army units. The Divisional artilley and engineers remained of Northumbrian origin.
