51st Highland Volunteers

Formed 1 April 1967 as 51st Highland Volunteers with Headquarters at Perth as TAVR II unit being the successor to the following Territorial Army battalions: 4th/5th and 6th/7th Battalion The Black Watch (TA), 11th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders (TA), 4th/5th Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (TA), 3rd Battalion The Gordon Highlanders (TA), 7th and 8th Battalions The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (TA), 1st Battalion The London Scottish (TA) and 1st Battalion The Liverpool Scottish (TA).

COMPANIES:
HQ Company (Black Watch) at Perth. Formed from 6th/7th Battalion The Black Watch (TA).
A Company (Black Watch) at Dundee. Formed from 4th/5th Battalion The Black Watch (TA).
B Company (Seaforth) at Wick. Formed from 11th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders (TA) and 540th Lt AD Regiment, RA.
C Company (Cameron) at Inverness. Formed from 4th/5th Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (TA).
D Company (Gordon) at Aberdeen. Formed from 3rd Battalion The Gordon Highlanders (TA).
E Company (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) at Stirling. Formed from 7th and 8th Battalions The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (TA).
G Company (London Scottish) at Westminster, London. Formed from 1st Battalion The London Scottish (TA).
V Company (Liverpool Scottish) at Score Lane, Liverpool. Formed from 1st Battalion The Liverpool Scottish (TA).

1 April 1969: Three new companies formed from disbanded TAVR III units:
No.1 (Lovat Scouts) Company at Kirkwall with Pltn at Lerwick.
No.2 (Queen's Own Highlanders) Company at Fort William with Pltn at Stornoway.
No.3 (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company at Dumbarton with Pltn at Campbeltown.
Furthermore: 'HQ' Company formed platoon at Kirkcaldy; 'C' Company formed platoon at Elgin; 'D' Company formed platoon at Keith.

1 April 1971: 'B' Company transferred as 'B' Company 2nd Battalion; 'C' Company transferred as 'C' Company 2nd Battalion; 'D' Company transferred as 'D' Company 2nd Battalion; No.1 Company transferred as 'A' Company 2nd Battalion; No.2 Company transferred as 'E' Company 2nd Battalion.
'B' (The Black Watch) Company formed at Kirkcaldy from cadre 3rd Battalion The Black Watch and Kirkcaldy platoon 'HQ' Company; 'C' (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company formed at Grangemouth from cadre 3rd Battalion The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders; No.3 Company redesignated as 'D' Company.

1st Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers

Redesignated 1 April 1971 on formation of 2nd Battalion.

V (The Liverpool Scottish) Company at Score Lane, Liverpool.

1 April 1975: 'C' Company at Grangemouth transferred as 'C' Company 3rd Battalion; 'D' Company at Dumbarton and Cambeltown transferred as 'D' Company 3rd Battalion.
'B' Company at Kirkcaldy redesignated as 'K' Company.

1 January 1981: 'E' Company transferred as 'A' Company 3rd Battalion.

1984: 'Z' (HSF) Company formed at Perth, Kirkcaldy and Dundee.

1992: Battalion reorganised into a three rifle company order of battle. By this time subtitles were omitted.
'Z' (HSF) Company disbanded.
July 1992: 'B' Company formed at Forfar.
21 September 1992: 'V' Company transferred as 'V' Company 5th/8th (Volunteer) Battalion The King's Regiment.
20 April 1993: 'G' Company transferred as 'A' Company The London Regiment .
 

13 December 1994: Battalion redesignated as 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment).


2nd Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Elgin from cadres of 3rd (T) Battalion The Gordon Highlanders and 3rd (T) Battalion The Queen's Own Highlanders and companies of 1st Battalion.

HQ (Queen's Own Highlanders and Gordon Highlanders) Company at Elgin with dets at Keith and Buckie as Administrative Platoon from cadre 3rd (T) Battalion The Queen's Own Highlanders and Pltns 'C' Company and 'D' Company 1st Battalion.
A (The Lovat Scouts) Company at Kirkwall with Pltn at Lerwick by redesignation of No.1 Company 1st Battalion.
B (Queen's Own Highlanders) Company at Wick by redesignation of 'B' Company 1st Battalion.
C (Queen's Own Highlanders) Company at Inverness with dets at Dingwall, Fort William and Newtonmore by redesignation of 'C' Company 1st Battalion and Fort William Pltn No.2 Company 1st Battalion.
D (The Gordon Highlanders) Company at Aberdeen by redesignation of 'D' Company 1st Battalion.
E (Queen's Own Highlanders) Company at Stornoway by redesignation of No.2 Company 1st Battalion.
G (The Gordon Highlanders) Company at Aberdeen from cadre 3rd (T) Battalion The Gordon Highlanders.

1 April 1975:'HQ' Company formed by expansion existing elements. 'B' Company transferred as 'B' Company 3rd Battalion.
'E' Company merged into 'C' Company forming platoon at Stornoway; 'G' Company merged into 'D' Company.

1 January 1981: 'A' Company broken up with elements going to other companies.
'A' (Queen's Own Highlanders and Lovat Scouts) Company formed at Wick with Lovat Scouts platoon at Kirkwall by merger 'B' Company 3rd Battalion and elements late 'A' Company; 'D' (Gordon Highlanders and Lovat Scouts) Company formed at Aberdeen with Lovat Scouts platoon at Lerwick by reorganisation of 'D' Company with elements late 'A' Company. 'B' (Gordon Highlanders) Company formed at Peterhead by redesignation of 'HQ' Company 3rd Battalion.

1984: 'Y' (HSF) Company formed at Elgin, Inverness, Stornoway, Wick and Kirkwall. 'X' (HSF) Company formed at Aberdeen, Lerwick, Peterhead and Laurencekirk.

1992: 'Y' (HSF) Company and 'X' (HSF) Company disbanded.
March 1993: Battalion reorganised into three rifle company establishment.
'A' Company at Wick and Kirkwall formed Support Group with additional elements at Dingwall.
 

10 February 1995: Battalion redesignated as 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons).


3rd Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers

Formed 1 April 1975 with Headquarters at Peterhead with companies from 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalion.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Peterhead.
B (Queen's Own Highlanders) Company at Wick by redesignation of 'B' Company 2nd Battalion.
C (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company at Grangemouth by redesignation of 'C' Company 1st Battalion.
D (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Company at Dumbarton with Pltns at Campbeltown and Dunoon by redesignation of 'D' Company 1st Battalion.

1 January 1981: 'HQ' Company transferred as 'B' Company 2nd Battalion; 'B' Company transferred as 'A' Company 2nd Battalion.
New 'HQ' Company formed at Stirling; 'A' Company formed at Stirling by redesignation of 'E' Company 1st Battalion. Battalion Headquarters moved to Stirling.

1984: 'W' (HSF) Company formed at Stirling, Dumbarton and Grangemouth.
1 January 1985: 'D' Company formed at Cumbernauld.
Official title of Battalion became: 3rd Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders).

1992: 'W' (HSF) Company disbanded.
March 1993 Battalion reorganised into a three rifle company establishment.
'A' Company absorbed into 'HQ' Company; 'C' Company moved to Falkirk.
 

10 February 1995: Battalion redesignated as 7th/8th (Volunteer) Battalion The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's).
