The Cheshire Regiment

Formed 1 July 1881 by redesignation of 22nd Regiment of Foot.

1st Battalion
Raised 8 March 1688 as the Duke of Norfolk's Regiment of Foot.

3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Cheshire Regiment

Formed 5 April 1988 with Headquarters at Runcorn with companies from Mercian Volunteers.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Runcorn (formed in 1986).
A Company at Stockport by redesignation of 'A' Company 1st Battalion Mercian Volunteers.
B Company at Macclesfield (formed in 1986).
C Company at Ellesmere Port by redesignation of 'C' Company 2nd Battalion Mercian Volunteers.
D Company at Crewe with Pltn at Northwich (formed in 1986).

1993: reduced to three rifle company order of battle.
1 April 1993: 'B' Company at Macclesfield disbanded. Headquarters and 'HQ' Company moved to Abbots Park, Chester.

1 April 1995: Battalion converted to Fire Support Battalion. Battle honours used for company designations.
Salerno Company at Stockport with Milan Pltn at Macclesfield by redesignation of 'A' Company.
Gaza Company at Crewe with Mortar Pltn at Ellesmere Port and GPMG (SF) at Northwich by amalgamation of 'C' Company and 'D' Company.
 

1 July 1999: Battalion disbanded as result of the Strategic Defence Review.
'Salerno' Company reduced to Pltn at Stockport under 'B' Company The King's and Cheshire Regiment and 'Gaza' Company redesignated as 'D' Coy The King's and Cheshire Regiment.
