The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment

Formed 17 May 1958 by amalgamation, less Territorials, of The Devonshire Regiment and The Dorset Regiment.

Formed 17 May 1958 by merger is 1st Battalion The Devonshire Regiment  and 1st Battalion The Dorset Regiment.

4th (Volunteer) Battalion The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment (1st Rifle Volunteers)

Formed 12 October 1987 with Headquarters at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter by removal of companies from The Wessex Regiment.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Exeter. Formed 1990 by redesignation of 'E' Coy.
A Company at Plymouth. Formed 1990 by redesignation/expansion of Pltn 'E' Coy.
E Company at Exeter by redesignation of 'E' Company 1st Battalion The Wessex Regiment.

1988: 'B' Company formed at Paignton.
1989: 'G' (HSF) Company formed in Plymouth.

December 1990: 'C' Company formed at Dorchester by redesignation 'C' Company 1st Battalion The Wessex Regiment.

June 1992: Battalion reorganised into three rifle company establishment.
'B' Company at Paignton reformed as detachment under 'HQ' Company. 'D' Company formed at Poole by redesignation of 'D' Company 1st Battalion The Wessex Regiment.
'G' (HSF) Company disbanded.
 

1 July 1999: Battalion disbanded as result of the Strategic Defence Review.
'HQ' Company and 'A' Company amalgamated to form 'E' Company The Rifle Volunteers; 'C' Company and 'D' Company amalgamated to form 'C' Company The Rifle Volunteers .
