The Light Infantry and Mercian Volunteers

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Wolverhampton from cadres of The Worcestershire Regiment, 5th/6th Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment and The King's Shropshire and Herefordshire Light Infantry.

COMPANIES:
A (Worcestershire Regiment) Company at Worcester. Formed from cadre The Worcestershire Regiment.
B (5th/6th Battalion Staffordshire Regiment) Company at Stoke-on-Trent. Formed from cadre 5th/6th Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment.
C (King's Shropshire Light Infantry) Company at Wellington. Formed from cadre The King's Shropshire and Herefordshire Light Infantry.
D (Herefordshire Light Infantry) Company at Ross-on-Wye. Formed from cadre The King's Shropshire and Herefordshire Light Infantry.
E Company at Walsall. Formed originally as a platoon, but expanded to a company.
 

1 April 1975: Battalion reorganised to form 2nd Battalion Mercian Volunteers.
'A' Company at Worcester, 'B' Company at Stoke and 'E' Company at Walsall reorganised as 'A', 'B' and 'D' Company 2nd Battalion Mercian Volunteers respectively.
'C' Company at Wellington redesignated as 'E' Company 5th Battalion The Light Infantry (Volunteers);
'D' Company at Ross-on-Wye redesignated as 'D' Company 6th Battalion The Light Infantry (Volunteers).
