Northumbrian Volunteers

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Bishop Auckland from cadres of The County of Durham Regiment RA, 4th Battalion The Border Regiment, 4th/5th/6th and 7th Battalion The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and 6th/8th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry.

COMPANIES:
A (Durham Royal Artillery) Battery at Hordern. Formed from cadre The County of Durham Regiment RA.
B (4th Border Regiment) Company at Kendal and Penrith. Formed from cadre 4th Battalion The Border Regiment.
C (4th/5th/6th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers) Company at Newcastle and Gosforth. Formed from cadre 4th/5th/6th Battalion The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers.
D (7th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers) Company at Alnwick and Berwick upon Tweed. Formed from cadre 7th Battalion The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers.
E (6th/8th Durham Light Infantry) Company at Hordern. Formed from cadre 6th/8th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry; later to Hebburn.
 

1 April 1975: Unit disbanded.
Headquarters formed Headquarters 7th Battalion The Light Infantry (Volunteers).
'HQ' Company, 'A' Company and 'E' Company redesignated as 'HQ' Company, 'A' Company and 'B' Company 7th Battalion The Light Infantry (Volunteers).
'B' Company at Kendal became 'C' Company 4th (Volunteer) Battalion The King's Own Royal Border Regiment .
'C' Company at Newcastle and Gosforth and 'D' Company at Alnwick and Berwick reorganised as 'Y' Company and 'HQ' Company 6th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers .
