The Royal Irish Rangers (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th)

Formed 1968 by amalgamation of The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, The Royal Ulster Rifles and The Royal Irish Fusiliers. 1 July 1992 amalgamated with The Ulster Defence Regiment to form The Royal Irish Regiment (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th and The Ulster Defence Regiment).

1st Battalion
Formed 1968 by redesignation of 1st Battalion The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

2nd Battalion
Formed 1968 by redesignation of 1st Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles.

3rd Battalion
Formed 1968 by redesignation of 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Fusiliers.


4th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th) (North Irish Militia)

Formed 18 April 1978 with Headquarters at Portadown by redesignation of similar designated units of The North Irish Militia.

HQ Company at Portadown.
A (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) Company at Omagh with det at Enniskillen.
B (Royal Ulster Rifles) Company at Newtownabbey, Belfast.
C (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Company at Portadown.
D (London Irish Rifles) Company at Chelsea, London and Hillington, Middlesex.

1981: 'C' Company redesignated as 'A' Company 5th Battalion; New 'C' (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Company formed at Ballymena and Limavady.

1 April 1992: Battalion reduced to a three rifle company order of battle.
'D' Company at Chelsea, London redesignated as 'D' Company 8th Battalion The Queen's Fusiliers.
 

1 April 1993: Battalion disbanded as result of Options for Change and amalgamated with 5th (Volunteer) Battalion to form 4th/5th Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers (Volunteers).


5th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th) 

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters and a Command and Admin Platoon at Armagh from cadres of 6th Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles and 7th Battalion The Royal Irish Fusiliers.

COMPANIES:
B (Royal Irish Rifles) Company at Killyleagh. Formed from cadre 6th Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles.
C (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Company at Armagh and Lurgan. Formed from cadre 7th Battalion The Royal Irish Fusiliers.

1978 Battalion changed to BOAR role. Subtitles possibly omitted from this time.
'B' Company formed platoon at Bangor.

1980: 'C' Company consolidated at Lurgan, 'HQ' Company formed at Armagh from elements 'C' Company.

1981: 'A' Company formed at Lisburn by transfer 'C' Company 4th Battalion.

1982: 'B' Company moved to Newtownards; 'HQ' Company and Support Weapons Groups moved to Banbridge, Headquarters remained at Armagh.

1986: 'D' Company formed at Lisburn, moved to Belfast in 1988. Recce Pltn formed at Armagh.
 

1 April 1993: Battalion disbanded as result of Options for Change and amalgamated with 4th (Volunteer) Battalion to form 4th/5th Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers (Volunteers).
