Formed 11 June 1969 by amalgamation of The South Wales Borderers and The Welch Regiment.

2nd (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot)

Formed 1 October 1993 with Headquarters at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff by amalgamation of 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion and 4th (Volunteer) Battalion.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff by redesignation of 'HQ' Company 3rd Battalion.
A (Swansea) Company at Swansea with Pltn at Llanelli by amalgamation of 'B' Company, 'D' Company and part 'A' Company of 4th Battalion.
B (Rorke's Drift) Company at Cefn Fforest with Pltns at Pontypool by amalgamation of 'A' Company and 'B' Company 3rd Battalion.
C (Pontypridd) Company at Pontypridd with Pltn at Pentre by redesignation of 'C' Company 3rd Battalion.
 

1 July 1999: Battalion disbanded as result of the Strategic Defence Review.
'A' Company redesignated as 'B' Company The Royal Welsh Regiment, 'HQ' Company and 'C' Company amalgamated to form 'C' Company The Royal Welsh Regiment.


3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot)

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff from cadre The Monouthshire Battalion The South Wales Borderers and companies from the late Welsh Volunteers.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff. Formed by redesignation of 'HQ' Company Welsh Volunteers. ATk Pltn at Pentre and Mortar Pltn at Cwmcarn.
A Company at Abertillery with platoons at Blackwood and Cwmcarn.
B Company at Newport and Pontypool. Formed by redesignation of 'B' Company Welsh Volunteers and cadre The Monouthshire Battalion The South Wales Borderers.
C Company at Pontypridd with Pltn at Pentre. Formed by redesignation of 'C' Company Welsh Volunteers and cadre 5th/6th (T) Battalion The Welch Regiment.

1984 'E' (HSF) Company formed at Cardiff and Brecon.
1 April 1985 'D' (City of Cardiff) Company formed at Cardiff from Defence Platoon 'HQ' Company.

May 1992 'E' (HSF) Company disbanded.
 

1 October 1993: Battalion disbanded and merged with 4th (Volunteer) Battalion to form 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion as result of Options for Change.
Headquarters and 'HQ' Company formed Headquarters and 'HQ' Company 2nd Battalion;
'A' Company and 'B' Company merged to form 'B' Company 2nd Battalion;
'C' Company redesignated as 'C' Company 2nd Battalion.

'D' Company reroled as 580 Squadron 157 Transport Regiment RLC.


4th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot)

Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Llanelli.

COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Llanelli. Formed as Adminitrative Platoon from cadre 4th (T) Battalion The Welch Regiment.
A Company at Llanelli.
B Company at Neath with Pltn at Swansea.
C Company at Bridgend with Pltn at Maesteg.

1 April 1985: 'D' (City of Swansea) Company formed at Swansea from Swansea platoon 'B' Company.

December 1987: Headquarters and 'HQ' Company re-located at Swansea.
 

1 October 1993: Battalion disbanded and merged with 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion to form 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion as result of Options for Change.
'B' Company and 'D' Company merged with part of 'A' Company to form 'A' Company 2nd Battalion.
Remainder 'A' Company reroled as Troop of 224 Squadron 157 Transport Regiment RLC.
'C' Company reroled as 580 Squadron 157 Transport Regiment RLC.
