1st Battalion
Raised 16 March 1689 as Lord Herbert's Regiment of Foot.
3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers
Formed 1 April 1971 with Headquarters at Wrexham from cadres of The Flintshire and Denbighshire Yeomanry, 4th and 6th/7th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers and the late Welsh Volunteers.
COMPANIES:
Administrative Platoon at Wrexham. Formed from cadre 4th
Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers.
A (4th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers) Company at Wrexham
with platoons at Mold and Connah's Quay. Formed by redesignation of 'A'
Company Welsh Volunteers.
B (Flintshire and Denbighshire Yeomanry) Company at Colwyn Bay
with platoon at Prestayn. Formed from cadre The Flintshire and Denbighshire
Yeomanry and part 'A' Company Welsh Volunteers.
D (6th/7th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers) Company at Caernarfon
with platoons at Bangor and Aberystwyth. Formed from cadre 6th/7th Battalion
The Royal Welch Fusiliers and the late 'D' Company Welsh Volunteers.
1986: 'C' Company formed at Connah's Quay and Mold by
expansion of 'A' Company. Remainder 'A' Company merged with
'HQ'
Company. 'A' Company formed at Aberystwyth from elements
'D'
Company.
'B' Company formed platoon at Llandudno; platoon at Prestayn
moved to Rhyl. 'D' Company formed platoon at Holyhead.
'E' (HSF) Company formed.
1992: reduction to three rifle company establishment.
'A' Company at Aberystwyth disbanded to form Recce Pltn under
'HQ'
Company. 'C' Company re-named as 'A' Company at consolidated
as Queensferry.
Rhyl platoon 'B' Company disbanded; Holyhead platoon 'D'
Company disbanded.
'E' (HSF) Company disbanded.
COMPANIES:
HQ Company at Wrexham. Recce Pltn at Aberystwyth.
A Company at Queensferry.
B Company at Colwyn Bay with Pltn at Llandudno.
D Company at Caernarfon with Pltns at Bangor.
1 July 1999: Battalion disbanded as result of the Strategic
Defence Review.
'HQ' Company and 'A' Company amalgamated and 'B' Company
and 'D' Company amalgamated to form 'A' Company and 'D'
Company The Royal Welsh Regiment respectively.
