As you could have found on the starting page, my name is Wienand Drenth.
I was born on January 9th, of the year 1976 in Nijmegen. The first two
years of my life, I lived in Bergharen, a pretty small village some 15
miles west of Nijmegen. Subsequently, in 1978 I moved to Deest, 3 miles
north of Bergharen, an even smaller village situated at the river Waal.
My parents still live there.
In 1993 I started my studies in mathematics at the University of Nijmegen.
This ended in June 1998 when my thesis
was finished. At this moment I am working as a Phd-student at the University
of Eindhoven in the Scientific Computing Group. If everything is going
well, my Phd thesis should be finished in the summer of 2002.
Eventually, summer 2002 seemed a little optimistic as finishing date. Finally is became
summer of 2003 that writing of my thesis was speeded up more. In the middle of October
the manuscript was approved by my promoters so it could go to the printer. On October 29 the news
came that everything was printed! The actual defence of my thesis took place December 4 2003.
Click here for a photographic impression of that day.
What do I do?
In the previous section it is stated that I am currently working as a Phd-student.
The project I am working on is called NumLab,
but at this moment there is no more information available than what is
presented here. In the future this should become better. Besides working
on NumLab I am doing some research in least-squares methods for partial
differential equations and in the future this should be incorporated in
NumLab. But the road is still long, when writing these words in 1999. On 4 december
the road saw some end when I had my defence.
Another part of my research will concentrate on preconditioning techniques
for problems with inhomogeneous coefficients. See the Phd
related page for more information. Life is not all mathematics as one might
imagine, or not (at least you can try). Some other areas of interest are
the following:
Writing poems on some indifferent, seemingly unimportant noteworthy occasions.
Here
is a selection.
A couple of useful links
related to the above subjects.
Where do I live?
For those who are interested, please send an e-mail for my address.
As the address will not tell much, I will try to give some description
of the neighbourhood I live in. In administrative organs this area is called
Woensel-West. This comprised I guess everything between the Boschdijk and the railway,
and also above the city ring. So far the geographical location.
The houses in the area are mosly pre-war (WW2), and I think the belonged to the
employees of Philips. The Philips buildings are on the western side of the railway bank.
Now to the place itself. First of all, it is not the nicest location to go out
for a walk late at night, especially not if you are female. Though things have
been worse I have been told. Crime is (has been) quite high in this area. For example
my bike was stolen some years ago, while it was parked in front of my appartment.
There has also been an attempt to break into my car, also parked in front
of my dwelling. But apart from that it is not that bad.
