We intend to have immediate feedback and good ideas from students via the Master Sounding Board. It might help to detect and solve problems way before they surface in the questionaires.
However, we couldn't enough interested students in the first semester.  We hope that students are interested in the second semester (especially the freshmen in the master programs may feel more at home now and may be willing to join the sounding board).
Please send me an email if you are interested.

11-02-10 BIS

The course 1BM31  multiagent systems for e-business is unavailable because of staff changes.
This hampers the students that chose the stream “ICT-services”.
The stream has been redefined. The course 1BM31 is replaced by
1BM70 Health Care Business Networks.

11-01-10 all

Last week all first year master students got an invitation to express their interest in an honors track for their master study. It may happen, however, that students are not first year students in the formal sense but still are in the starting fase of their master studies.
So if you are interested you may consult the honors-flyer.

Under some conditions students may do an internship, and a "non-foreign" subset is even allowed an internship abroad. For those people an information meeting is scheduled:

Thursday november 12, from 12.45 to 13.30, in aud 1

You also may want to read the booklet "Studie en stage in het buitenland. Gewoon doen" issued by Nuffic as part of the "Nationale WilWeg-campagne 2009".

16-10-2009 all

We like you to inform you about course 2WX17, Communication Skills (still present as 2WX04 on the web page). This course is especially (read: only) meant for the international master students of the department of Computer Science; Dutch students and exchange students cannot register for this course.

Main objective of the course is to get acquainted to the Dutch academic way of working together in teams and presenting results.
Main topics are: presentation skills, meeting & decision making skills, negotiating skills, project & time management and team roles. These topics will be given in workshops during class meetings. You will do a lot of exercises so that you will have the opportunity to put the theory into practice. Therefore, class meetings are compulsory; you are allowed to miss only one meeting, which you have to make up for with an extra assignment. So if you are interested in taking this course, make sure beforehand if the schedule doesn’t clash with your other courses.

2WX17 will start in the 2nd quarter on Thursday afternoons from 13.45 till 17.30 hrs. There will be 8 class meetings; the first starts on the 12th of November, the last on the 14th of January. There are no class meetings during exam periods or holidays.
If you are interested in Communciation Skills, you can register by J.M.Beenhakker@tue.nl. More information about this course is found on the web page of 2WX17 (or still under 2WX04).

06-10-2009 all

Communication skills will be given again this academic year (for foreign master students only). It will be given in the second quartile under code 2WX17. Details will appear this week.
There are two slight changes comparing to former years: the summerschool for the newly arrived foreigners has changed so some elements are put back in the communication skills course and  technical writing is not part of communication skills anymore.

For technical writing students (all of them, so not restricted to foreign masters) are referred to the courses Academic skills in English 1(0T400) and 2  (0T500 preferred).

The combination of communication skills (2009/10 but not for former years) and Academic skills is useful and possible. For the program it will be topped to 5 ects (but it will be mentioned on your diploma completely).

Note that 0T300 is not accepted in your program, nor are other language courses.

01-10-2009 bis

The study guide mentions several courses from the department of IE&IS. There are several late changes to the courses given there. Most of them are deductable from the OWINFO subject information. Let's mention the changes we are aware of now:

old new
1BM45 (3 ects) 1BM46 (5 ects)
1BM60 1BM61
1JM10 1JM11
1JM16 no replacement
1JM26 1JM27
1ZM15 1ZM16

In particular this means that the stream-courses should be updated. The only severe change is the loss of 1JM16, due to the nonavailability of the teacher.

27-08-2009 all

Lets start a tradition.
Like last year we'll celebrate the start of a new semester with the so called kick-off meetings. A kick-off kicks off the corresponding master program, so we have four of them. The schedule of the kick-offs:

CSE Monday 31-08-09, 13.45-14.30, in Pav U.46
during the first hour of 2IF25, formal methods (2nd hour is normal, FM lecture)
ES Tuesday 01-09-09, 10.45-11.30, in Aud. 7
during the first hour of 2IN25, realtime-architectures (2nd hour normal)
BIS Thursday 03-09-09, 12.45-13.30, in IPO 0.98
during the lunch break
IST Friday 04-09-09, 12.45-13.30, in Ma 1.46
during the lunch break

The intention is to let the educational director inspire you to have a fruitful year in your favorite master program, and to let the study advisor explain to you a few of the regulations and modi vivendi.

We hope to see you all in the appropriate kick-off.

27-08-2009 all

The continuing story of the schedule...
It's getting more reliable every day. But I don't know about tomorrow.
Recently, changes have been made to 2WC14/6, 2IF35, 2IN25 and all seminars, we hope they can be seen in the schedule tomorrow.

26-08-2009 bis

Every "zijinstromer" in the BIS-program has two homologation courses by default (2II05 and 2DD21). Though it was not mentioned on the admission letter, the educational director insists on you doing those homologation courses. Only in case you can prove you did some of these courses in the past you may skip them (contact me if you think it applies to you).

25-08-2009 all

The TU/e schedule seems to be working again. For the moment I have the impression that the schedule for the master programs is correct. So, go ahead and plan your semester using http://owinfo.tue.nl

21-08-2009 all

After a few weeks of slightly wrong and incomplete schedules on owinfo.tue.nl we now have completely wrong schedules. The interplay between a new scheduler and an old database doesn't seem to be optimal.
I don't know when we can trust the schedule again, but I will keep you informed here.

18-08-2009 all

Several processes have been started to prepare us all for the new academic year.
Students as well as staff are eager to begin, but we have to wait another two weeks.
As a preparation you may want to learn the study guide by heart.
You may find a paper version with the student administration (HG 6.45).
The digital versions can be found on
http://w3.win.tue.nl/en/education/education_computer_science/masters_programs_guides/

Or you may want to construct a schedule.
However, the schedule at OWINFO ( http://owinfo.tue.nl) is not completely correct yet.
(E.g. 2IS15 has a Thursday instance which should be Friday 7&8).

Other things to do are: find and read the formal regulations, play hide and seek with the forms.
But, most of all, enjoy the science to be studied and practised,
get an impression of what you will be confronted with here or elswhere.
It's your party!

08-06-2009 all

Some students (feel the) need to improve their academic writing skills.
There are two courses that, at least partly, cover that: 0T400 and 0T500. The CEF entrance levels are B1 and B2, the end levels are B2 and C1 respectively.
(For the CEF levels see for instance
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_Languages
)
It is allowed to have one of these on your program (preferably 0T500), but not in combination with Communication skills.

04-06-2009 all

The regulations for internships are the same for all master programs. The main changes are:

26-05-2009 CSE

The CSE exam committee approved a new set of exam regulations. It is to be expected that the other master programs will follow in due time.

The main difference with the old regulations is the restriction of the master project time. In general, the project will last a maximum of 9 month. (There is a possibility to ask the exam committee for an additional 3 month, but only once.)

The new regulations may be found here.

26-05-2009 / 19-06-2009  BIS

The program for the BIS master will change starting from the academic year 2009/2010 on. The changes are:

 The four streams are
          B  Business process management (2II65, 1BM15, 1BM45)
          H  healthcare (1BM70; choice: 0EM60, 0EM61, 1JM05, 1JM16, 1JM26, 1BM45)
          I    ict services (2II45, 1BM31, 1BM40)
          L   logistics (1CM10, 1CM25, 1CM50, 1BM55)
In particular this means that the stream package for logistics is not part of the mandatories anymore.

The stream structure may also be used for the double degree program BIS/SEC, a 160 ects program for an additional educational master SEC next to BIS. Another possibility (for TUE BSc’s only) is to construct an international semester in the form of a free stream.

These changes are accepted by the appropriate committees and boards. They will appear  the next study guide.

26-02-2009 all

The executive board of the TUE mentioned on December 16th 2008 that they decided:

This is a major change with respect to the recent computer science practice in the master programs. We'll have to comply.

26-02-2009  all

Course 2WX04 (Communication Skills) will start at the 19th of March. You can enrol this course by e-mailing to J.M.Beenhakker@tue.nl before the 12th of March.
The intended audience for  2WX04 consists of international master students in the department of Informatics that did not do the STU-summer-school in the summer of 2008. The course is not open for regular Dutch students and not for foreign exchange students.

 The schedule is:

We have a maximum of 12 students for 2WX04, because of the practical nature of this course. This means that the sooner you register, the more change you have to enrol. If the group is full, you can of course take this course next year.

25-02-2009 all

This academic year the course 2ID35, Database technology, will not be given, but next academic year it  will be given again.
The seminar IS will be split into two seminars, for AIS and DH.

Revolutionary changes in the world of study advising:
My office moved to the study advise plaza on the sixth floor, and I moved with it.
The office hours are extended (and changed) too

So you're welcome now at HG 6.38
Office hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 17-18 hours.

In cases of my absence and utmost importance you may turn to my neighbor on the study advise plaza: Roel Bloo (HG 6.39), the Bachelor study advisor.

I'm convinced that we can serve you better now!

26-09-2008   ES

For ES students who have to take 5HH20 Networks and electronics as homologation course:

The course 5HH20 (6 ects) this year is replaced by 5DD17 Networks A: network analysis (3 ects) plus 5HH00 Electronics for embedded systems (3 ects). 5HH00 is lectured in semester 2.

In previous information on OWinfo it was stated that 5HH20 is replaced by 5DD10 Networks. This is a mistake and it will be corrected on OWinfo a.s.a.p.
For clarity: 5DD17 is a subset of 5DD10 networks. You are allowed to take the subexam next week (even if you have not registered), but it is not compulsory.

We apologise for the confusion,

26-08-2008

The elective ES-course 5ME10 is rescheduled to be given in the blocks B and C of the first trimester.

19-08-2008

For every master program (BIS, CSE, ES and IST) the start of the new academic year will be celebrated by a so-called kick-off meeting. See the kick-off page.

Some courses may need registration, please read the study guides and find out the special requirements for your favorite courses.
For example, advanced algorithms (2IL45), requires registration via study web before August 27.

For students that (almost) finished their studies, the next (Dutch) job-add from our OOTI program may be interesting.

Next week we start the first semester of the academic year 2008/9

old stuff

07-03-2008

Because of a mismatch between the Skills-course moments and the rest of the Master programs courses, there were not enough students to start the 2WX04 course as was planned (see the notes  on 21-12-2007 and 23-01-2008).
Here  we have a new attempt to organize a course on communication skills for the next two blocks. It starts on Thursday, March 20, 13.30-16.30.
schedule
Please send me your registration.

next week the second semester starts

23-01-2008

The capita selecta course 2IS99 that was to be taught by Wim Feijen will not be given. There were too few registrations.

Please look at the communication skills remark from 21-12-2007, registration is required!

Also reconsider the soundingboard request from 27-09-2007. We do want to have it started in Februari.

07-01-2008

The course 2IN55, Parallel computations and applications of Prof. P.A.J. Hilbers is lapsed. There will be no lectures anymore. On request from students interested in following the course and doing the exam this year there will be made special arrangements. Please contact Prof. P.A.J. Hilbers.

For electives for ES see keuze ES

Have a nice holiday time and a good start of 2008

21-12-2007

As in former years there will be a course called "communication skills" for foreign master students to make up for the lack of OGO in the bachelor. It is a 3 ects course in blocks D and E. Attendance and registration (with me) required.

27-09-2007

The semester system and all the related changes in the current curriculum may have caused some uncertainties and nuisances. Of course you all knew how to find me for questions and solutions.
However we do want to guide things on a less ad hoc basis. Therefore it would be nice to have a reliable and regular sounding board for the master programs, a group of students that can inform us on oddities as well as flaws, on nuisances and nicities, on desired initiatives and remarkable tendencies.

We think of a group consisting of students in all programmes, preferably a foreign (zijinstromer) and a domestic (doorstromer) student per program  and an old styler (TI5). The group is get together to advise and inform us at least every block.

If you feel like attending such a group, please mention that to me.

27-09-2007

For students with a Dutch nationality that graduate between March 01 2007 and December 31 2008 some  grants for a foreign study are available via the VSBfonds.
For the criteria and other details please refer to the website  www.vsbfonds.nl/beurzen

10-09-2007

Many people are puzzled by the homologation courses.
The people that come and study here have many different backgrounds:

In order to give all the same courses we have to flatten out the differences. Which is impossible, but certain knowledge is considered to be elementary and should be mastered by all. The committee of admittance required some of our new students to make up for deficiencies they are believed to have. Mostly this is done via the so called homologation courses that are part of the electives of the master program.
Therefore there are Bachelor courses that ought to be followed by some of the master-students, which  gives a language problem, since Bachelor courses are typically given in Dutch. We feel that freshmen courses ought to be studied by our masterstudents via self-tuition. If you can't do it, you really have to reconsider your existence here. As a service, we offer an English instruction and English study-material. The homologation courses for sophomores and higher will be given in English, so no language problem is to be expected.

The hbo-zijinstromers first followed a premaster program before the master program and in addition they need some more homologation as part of the electives in the master program.

Note that homologation courses are only accepted as a part of the electives if this is agreed upon, i.e. if it was required by the admittance committe or if it was required via the premaster additionals. Others may follow these courses, and they will get credits for it, but they don't count for the master program. So if you feel like doing them, go ahead, but ....

Typical homologation courses are:

You can imagine that it is not always possible to have schedules without overlapping homologation and mastercourses.
