Research
A couple of themes dominate my work: variational calculus, nonlinear
evolution problems (e.g. porous media flow), stability of elastic
structures, and minimization over (but not of) convex functions.
And much of my mathematical work is related to applications. I've
annotated the publications and grouped them more-or-less accordingly:
There's also a full list of my publications.
Using a different ordering principle, my direct collaborators at the TU are
- Michiel Renger (PhD)
- Andriy Hlod (PhD)
Former PhD students are Yves van Gennip,
Kamyar Malakpoor,
Bob Planqué
and Ignacio Guerra; Matthias Röger was a postdoc from 2004 to 2006, and
Marco Veneroni from 2006 to 2008.

Check out this contest: Bouw
het Beste Pakje 2001,
2002 (1)
and 2002 (2)
(build the best package, literally) where
visitors are invited to build a construction out of paper that will
hold as much weight as possible. The Rules are
- you can use more than one sheet of paper, but the result is divided by the number
of sheets you use
- the minimal height is 17 cm
- you can use scissors and staples
-
Next: Vouw het Beste Vliegtuig
at the Open Dag 2003.
Fold a paper airplane that flies as far as possible. Use as much paper as you wish, scissors,
glue, paperclips, staples, anything - as long as it goes a long way. The only condition
is that the airplane is launched mechanically, from a launch pad (to prevent the
strongest thrower from winning). Great fun, many people tried; the winner: Wout, 12 years old, with 6 meters!
