I am an assistant professor
in the group System Architecture and Networking (SAN) of the Department of
Mathematics and Computer Science of Eindhoven University of Technology
(TU/e). I am currently involved in the SOFIA project and the VITRUVIUS
project. I worked for I-Share project as a postdoctoral researcher with SAN. I received my B.Sc. and
M.Sc.(with honor)in 1999 and 2002 respectively. I
obtained my PhD in Computer Science from Shanghai Jiaotong
University (China) in 2006. *

With
the SOFIA project solutions the "embedded information" in the
physical world can be made available for smart services - connecting physical
world with information world.
SOFIA envisions that the ongoing digital convergence will fundamentally change
the way embedded systems are used to construct not only physical devices and
but also services.
The mission of SOFIA project is to create a semantic interoperability platform
which enables and maintains cross-industry interoperability which is a platform
for new services. Concurrently the solution will foster innovation while
maintaining value of existing legacy multi-vendor interoperability platform.
The key outcomes of the project relate to user interaction paradigms for
interacting in smart environments, the common interpretability solution between
many heterogeneous devices and embedded systems, and on the application
development schemes that can mobilise new developers
for smart environments.
The key factor in these smart environments will be common, open information
storage and search extent for all embedded systems, regardless of their
specific implementation technology. In this vision, simple, local mash-up
applications will be built on open data and devices.

The
VITRUVIUS project aims at exploring the underlying key consequences for the
architecture of Body Sensor Networks (BSN) and the handling of information
about the individual's body coming from power-constrained wireless sensor
nodes.
In VIRTUVIUS project, the psycho-physiological data about the behavior of the people
is monitored by the sensor nodes. This data can also be used in applications
ranging from sport coaching to computer gaming and letting seniors to be aware
of their personal behavior in a safe natural environment.
We focus on the research of system architecture in the context of BSN which can
provide secure access and secure transfer of personal data.
Software
functionalities are encapsulated and exposed on the network as so-called
services. These services are subsequently composed into an application by
external orchestration. Orchestrators determine what services are available and
how to compose them, in order to make certain new functionality available. This
external orchestration provides users with a high flexible and adaptable
implementation of applications by connecting services at runtime.
However some issues still remain in current external orchestration middleware
including privacy of service providers, QoS guarantee
for service users and secure communication.
Therefore, in the Freeband I-Share project, we
researched the secure and efficient formation of applications from distributed
services. The idea is that service discovery, access and coordination depends
on virtual community membership. Our VICSDA middleware addresses the formation
and operation of these virtual communities. Detail information about VICSDA and
prototypes downloading can refer to the SAN I-Share
website.
We also worked on context aware resource management to rich the functionality
of VICSDA. Many applications, multimedia streaming, for example, are inherently
dynamic. For instance, the availability of shared services, required resources
of underlying devices can change at any time. Dynamically redistributing
reserved resources within application activities can help to meet users'
requirements, especially when unexpected perturbations lead to resource
scarcity.
As foreseen, fault detection and recovery of the system will be addressed in
the future to facilitate enhanced reliability and robustness of VICSDA.
The
AMOSA software platform aims at bringing better reusability of the existing SOA
approaches (Web services and UPnP) and at improving the development of service
oriented application through external coordination.
AMOSA provides discoverability and interoperability across these standards.
AMOSA provides a tooling support to perform this mapping to Web services and
UPnP. Within AMOSA language support is also studied to define the services and
service compositions.
An AMOSA service is specified through defining provided and required
interfaces, where an interface defines a collection of operations and
parameters. There are standardized interfaces for specific tasks like binding
and management. An AMOSA standard interface uses AMOSA-level data types and is
implementation language independent. As a consequence, an AMOSA service can be
written using different programming languages and run on different operating
systems, as long as the specified interfaces are provided and used.
AMOSA is the test bed for the VICSDA middleware. With fair flexibility in
building services with virtual community functionalities and composing new applications
in an agile manner by leveraging existing SOA infrastructure, our approaches to
research issues addressed in the I-Share project have been approved.
