There is a lot of theory on etale cohomology of algebraic varieties over arbitrary fields, but not much is known about computational aspects. I will say what I know, and indicate some applications to explicit algebraic number theory (non-solvable Galois extensions) and to (some) lattices. No knowledge of etale cohomology will be assumed.
