The 2011/2012 Modeling Week Industrial and Applied Mathematics is closed!

The modeling week for the Industrial and Applied Mathematics master program was concluded with the final presentations on Nov. 11. This year’s edition involved seventeen students working on four projects. The students were divided into four groups, each dealing with one of the proposed projects. The first project was proposed by Infracomfort and concerned the optimal placement of infrared heaters in a room. Furthermore, the Eindhoven based company CQM put forward a challenging question of finding the daily, weekly and monthly staff schedules for refueling operations at airports. Finally, LIME, a spin-off of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in Eindhoven, contributed with two interesting projects: an image analysis problem in cooperation with ESTEC and ASML on the optical data of mixed water-air flow in tubes, and a problem on LED positioning for uniform lumination of signs. We are much obliged to our industrial partners for their kind cooperation!

As a preparation for the modeling week, all participants attended two workshops on communication skills and group work. These were organized by the Student Service Center of the university. The week itself started with the problem presentations and discussions with the problem owners. After this, from Monday afternoon until Friday, the students have worked in teams at the university. To ensure a proper team-work and a fruitful cooperation within each project, every team was coached by a trainee from the Mathematics for Industry postgraduate program. Besides, this program has offered help in various logistic matters, an indispensable support that is gratefully acknowledged.

We would like to thank the problem owners fo providing such interesting assignemts, and all participants for their efforts!
